Gaga: Number one Aussie teen fashion star
AUSSIE teenagers love cheap and fast fashion, consider themselves trendsetters, and take style inspiration from pop star Lady Gaga.
A snapshot of global teen shopping patterns found 70 per cent of Aussie youngsters said fashion was important to their lives. A quarter go shopping weekly, a third shop every few weeks, and inexpensive street and beach labels with a high turnover of new clothing collections are their favourites. Eccentric singer Lady Gaga was named the number one teen fashion star for 60,000 boys and girls from all but one of the 31 countries involved in the survey, including Australia.
For girls, tween idol Miley Cyrus was ranked number two, followed by Paris Hilton and Brazilian model Gisele Bundchen, according to the poll by online virtual community Habbo. Jacqueline Di Vincenzo, from St Albans, Roanna Sanelli, from Bundoora, and Abbey Checkley, of Montmorency, all 15, tried on bright Lady Gaga-inspired street clothes at teen store Jay Jays.
The girls said they shop every week, more than the majority of those surveyed, because new fashion is constantly arriving. “I think the results of the survey are true because Lady Gaga wears different styles so different trends start,” Roanna said.
Jacqueline said: “Fashion is a way to show the world my personality.” Aussie teens are less likely to go broke from their love of fashion, shopping more infrequently than some South American countries.
